THE BUZZ: The sideshow that never ends

In the most anticipated congressional testimony since Watergate, fired FBI Director James Comey was sworn in before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence this week and lived up to his billing as the reprobate who could keep the rabble roused over the Russian Election Influence Sideshow That Never Ends.

What people got out of the hearing depended on what they took to it. President Trump and his GOP supporters declared him vindicated. Not only was there no Trump collusion with the Rooskies, but he never, ever tried to get anybody to look the other way. Trump's sworn Democratic enemies and their mainstream media collaborators saw Trump as an evil scoundrel who was such a liar that he should be impeached just on general principle.

Those who went in thinking Comey was a courageous defender of fairness and those who saw him as a waffling coward probably came out thinking the same thing, because he showed himself to be both of those and more.

And the American people undoubtedly had their impressions reinforced that Washington is just a bunch of venal back-stabbers who would rather do anything but what Americans sent them to Washington to do. Tax reform? Health care? Border security? Who has time for such nonsense?

In the meantime, North Korea's crazy leader seems ever closer to doing something incredibly dangerous with his nuclear weapons. The Middle East is on the verge of exploding. Terrorists are tearing through Europe unchecked, and Vladimir Putin is rubbing his hands with glee at the thought of his next conquest.

Clowns to the left of us, jokers to the right, and here we are, stuck in the middle.
